2 Peter 1: Take the Steps

Take the Steps

When you follow Christ, 2 Peter 1:5-8 shows you how to reflect that decision. If you have faith in Jesus yet have no virtue (high moral standards), isn't that a contradiction? What about the steps of knowledge, self control and steadfastness (fixed focus)? Didn't Jesus have knowledge of the Scriptures? Didn't he exhibit self control and have a fixed focus on doing God's will? Round everything out with godliness, brotherly affection and love and you are in the realm of what it is to be Christlike among those who also striving to do so and those who are on the outside watching. Your journey is your journey and not for comparison, but for you to honor God.

Hebrews 13: What Pleases God?

What Pleases God?

In Hebrews 13:1-5 there are some issues pointed out that we as Christ followers will forever face as we are human and prone to mistakes and bad decisions no matter how much we follow Christ. We are told to continue loving like brothers, be hospitable to strangers, show love to prisoners (imprisoned for the sake of the gospel aka persecuted), honor marriages and be free from the love of money. When we love like brothers that means like someone is family and we treat them with the same love that we would family members. When we are hospitable to strangers (people we don't know including foreigners) we could even be entertaining angels. When we remember those fellow believers in prison by writing them letters and visiting them then we are showing them Christ like love as Jesus loved those imprisoned by their own sin or that of others, so we should do the same especially to those imprisoned for being Christ followers. Honoring marriages is another big one as we make commitments to God and our spouses in relation to what is scriptural. We are to keep our lives free from the love of money. We need to use money, but not love it as we cannot serve 2 masters. And through all of this we also must remember that God will never leave us or forsake us. We must stay true to His commands and direction.

Friday Focus #36

Be Loving Anyway

It can be very difficult to be loving to someone who is not being loving to you. Maybe they have insulted you or something like that and now you want to verbally retaliate. But ask yourself, does that honor God? If you are trying to figure out how you can insult someone in a round about way, then you are not focused on being loving. You are focused on revenge or vengeance. All we do is to be God honoring, even toward those that do not know or care for Jesus.
Remember that time they said/did that thing that hurt you? I mean it really hurt. You may have an emotion scar or even a physical one. The life of Jesus says for us to still love them. WHAT?!?! Yes, still love them. That does not mean you let them in your house and trust them. But it does mean get right in your heart and head (over and over again if need be) and forgive them. You may think, how am I supposed to do that? Well, ask God how he does it with you for those times you did people wrong or hurt someone? I struggle with looking at the words of others and think "that's not the Christian response" and then I think of the several things I said that day/week that are also not the Christian response. I need to repent and not just keep sinning. I need be loving like Jesus said in John 13:34.

2 Thessalonians 1: For Those That Don't Know God

For Those That Don't Know God

In this 2nd letter from Paul to the Thessalonians we get a screen shot of what hell is like. I know many people when they read the Bible, tend to overlook the parts about hell and what happens to those who do not know God. Now, "know" can be in the general sense as in knowing of something. Or it can be in the sense that you seek to understand and you love and honor and respect God. There is difference in the usage of the word "know." In verses 7-9, Paul tells the church (who has been persecuted) that those persecutors will have to answer to Jesus and his angels. There will be "flaming fire" and vengeance will be inflicted for those who do not "know" God and do not obey Jesus. We can scour through scripture and remember the things that make us feel good (feel good gospel) but do not forget to read the truth and the whole truth so help you God for the sake of your soul.

Friday Focus #31

One Another-ing

It is very easy to get caught up in thinking about ourselves and our wants and even perceive those wants as needs. When we truly focus on what God wants from us we can see how important it is for us to honor Him and be loving to one another. During this times of the year there is much discussion regarding politics and a number of divisive things are being said. While not everyone engaged in these discussions are Christ followers, some of these people are or at least believe themselves to be overlooking that in favor of personal wants that are outside of the glory of God. Doing a Google search of "how many one another bible verses" I found a document that counts 59 uses of one another in the New Testament. Here are a few that I would like to highlight.

In Mark 9:50 Jesus is talking about having salt in ourselves. Salt here can be used as a reference to sacrifices that were covered with salt and/or salt being a metaphor for the Holy Spirit. Jesus says, " Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another." This does not mean do it on your own accord but have the Holy Spirit in you as that also relates to a sacrifice of self. By that sacrifice of self and having the Holy Spirit in us, we can "be at peace with one another." It is hard to say or do divisive things when you have submitted your will to God. If you stay focused on being served then you are part of the problem.

We have probably covered John 13:34-35 numerous times about loving one another (Jesus's command) and that is how people will know we are Christ followers. But, let's take it a step further. What task is so beneath you that you would never do it? Cleaning toilets? Taking out the trash? Well, Jesus was so humble in his living that something as low as washing someone's feet was not beneath him. How would you sacrifice for your brother or sister in Christ if they needed you to? Would you allow yourself to be degraded in a sense to meet a need for them? Jesus says in John 13:14-15 that since he has done this that we should do the same type of activity as he has shown us an example of how to be.

Finally, I leave you with one more. Being a Christ follower does not equate to perfection from the eyes of others. It means being dedicated to God's will. It means accepting the Holy Spirit as your guide and God's grace through Christ. In Romans 15:7, Paul says something very important that often gets overlooked. He says, "Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God." This does not mean that we accept sin and just say it is okay, but remember where you were when first became a Christ follower. Remember the grace you needed or had. Now apply that to others. We are all works in progress. Love them enough to let them grow.

Philippians 4: Strength for Our Thinking

Strength for Our Thinking

As Paul ends his letter to the Philippians he sends them off with words of encouragement in the Lord. Think about how often we choose words that are not encouraging and are condemning outside of what God wants from us. I often wonder if the words people say are what God wanted from them or what they just wanted to say themselves. But, in verse 8 Paul says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." He wants us (as it is God honoring) to focus on what is righteous and not unrighteous things.

How do we do that? What power do we pull from? In verse 13, Paul says "I can do all things through him who strengthens me." He shows us the source of his strength which is not his own. He relies in God/Christ/the Holy Spirit to give him the strength he needs. It is not will power, but God power.

Philippians 3: Shed Selfishness, Seek Sacrifice

Shed Selfishness, Seek Sacrifice

For those who spent more time thinking about doing what makes them happy and doing what pleased them, they showed that they were not honoring the Lord. God is not waiting for us to find what makes us happy and just live doing that, but He is wanting us to sacrifice. Paul points out that some were focused on worshiping their bellies (literally and figuratively on living for self). Paul points them out in Philippians 3:19 and says their end is destruction (more figurative to eternal damnation). He says that since they worship their bellies, their minds are on earthly things. Look, we all slip up, but some are living lives of missing the mark when it comes to the target of seeking to be Christ like.

Ephesians 5: Being Wise Instead of Foolish

Being Wise Instead of Foolish

The reminders are so important. Paul wants the church in Ephesus to focus on what is important and not what isn't important. Whether you are single or married there needs to be a focus on doing what is wise and not what is foolish. In Ephesians 5:3-4, Paul points out the foolishness he sees in the church such as sexual immorality, all impurity, filthiness, foolish talk or crude joking. Paul says that they are all out of place and should be replaced with giving thanks. Paul continues and tells the church to make the most of every opportunity, not for selfish gain, but as to what honors God. Those who are married have to also honor God, but differently than those who are single. Also, in Ephesians 5:22 tells wives to submit to their husbands as to the Lord. Many will argue, but I say if your husband is not worthy of being lord in the home, you married the wrong guy. But also, in verse 25, we have a different take on things that focuses on the husbands responsibility to his wife. They should love their wives as Christ loved the church. If we all did what was God honoring, we all would be in a lot less trouble.

Galatians 3: Law or Grace

Law or Grace

In Galatians 3:10 we read " For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” That means, if you are not accepting of Christ and his sacrifice then you are under the law. The law basically requires perfection. Christ does not require perfection but obedience to or submission to God's will through Christ. You can either be forgiven or keep striving for perfection. As I have stated before, you can be married and honor your spouse because you are married, or you can honor your spouse and your marriage because you love you spouse. As with Christ, it is not about religion but a relationship. As with marriage, it is not about the title of marriage but the honoring of the one you are with which represents that relationship. Christ has redeemed us by dying in our place and dying for our sins. The law was cursed and Christ became that curse for us (Galatians 3:13). Talk about total sacrifice.

1 Corinthians 8: From One God

From One God

This chapter is a short one, but let us understand one very important verse. In verse 6, Paul breaks down that there is one God who is our Father that created all things and is the reason we exist. Then he continues by telling us there is one Lord, that is Jesus, and through him (not from- see the difference) we exist and are all things. There was an issue with people dedicating food to idols and eating it and serving other "gods" but Paul needed the church to recognize that there is one God and no more.

Paul then reminds the church members in verses 7-13 that if their eating of a meat, especially one that is offered to a god and not God, then that could cause a brother to stumble. What we eat doesn't make God like us more or less, but we do need to honor God with what we eat and how much of it. In other words, we do not over eat or starve ourselves. Our body is to be a living sacrifice in all facets of life (Romans 12:1). Ultimately, we want to honor God with all we do and when it comes to eating food that was offered to idols, then a brother in Christ might see that and do the same. We honor God and we love others.

Matthew 15:6- Gods Way

Matthew 15:6 "...So for the sake of your tradition you have made void  the word of God." commentary- The Pharisees were always trying to trip up Jesus's teachings with their ways. There was a ceremony of hand washing before eating made by elders not by scripture. These Pharisees thought that Jesus's  disciples were not being respectful to the elders because they didn't do what was the tradition. The Pharisees thought if you did not wash your hands before you ate then you were defiled from the inside. Yet, Jesus calls out their sin and hypocrisy with them not honoring their father & mother (verses 4-9). The Pharisees thought that their laws, traditions and ways were more honorable than those that God already had established.

In verse 10 Jesus explains that it is not about what someone eats that defiles them, but what comes out of someone's mouth. What someone eats is passed through their body (verse 17), but what comes out of the mouth is in the heart (verse 18).

Jesus is not saying don't wash your hands if they are dirty before you eat, but what he is saying is that what is most important about you is what is in your heart. That is what will corrupt you, not what you eat, but what you think and feel. When you read verse 19 you see it says "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander." Many of these people may feel are acceptable, but according to Jesus, they are not. Many have placed man's laws above God's.

Where do you see that happening today?
